Chutney is a very versatile condiment which goes with various appetizers, main dish, or as a dip. Chutney is a dish which originated from India. It is a jam-like condiment with sweet, tangy, and spicy flavors with some chunkier texture. 

What Is Chutney? 

Chutney is a sweet and savory condiment originating in India. Indian cuisine varies from region to region, and so do the flavors of chutney. Indian chutneys can be made from a variety of ingredients like coconuts, peanuts, mint, dates, tamarind, fruits, and a few spices. 

Chutney made with fruits is generally slow cooked with few spices, sugar, and vinegar. 

Ingredients

  • Apples
  • Ginger
  • Brown sugar
  • Cumin seeds
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Bay leaf
  • Cinnamon powder
  • Red chili powder
  • Salt
  • Oil
  • Apple cider vinegar

Step By Step Spiced Apple Chutney Recipe

In a mixing bowl, mix together the shredded apples, brown sugar, cinnamon powder, red chili powder, salt, and set aside for 10 mins. 

Process

In a pan, heat some oil, add cumin seeds, and let them splutter. 

Add cinnamon stick, bay leaf, and chopped ginger. Cook everything for 10 seconds. 

Transfer the apple mixture, stir, and cover the pan with a lid. Cook the apples for about 5 mins on medium low heat. 

Take out the lid, stir the apples, and add apple cider vinegar. 

Mix everything well and cover the pan with a lid. Cook the mixture for about 15 mins, stirring frequently. 

Remove the lid and cook the chutney for about 2-3 mins or until the moisture has evaporated.

Tips For Making Spiced Apple Chutney Recipe

  • Peeling the apples is completely optional. You can either shred the apples or finely chop them so they will cook faster. 
  • Do not change the ratio of the ingredients while making this chutney recipe, it will change the taste.

Variations

  • I have used regular apples but you can use any cooking apples as well. Skip peeling the skin of apples if you wish.
  • Finely chop the apples instead of shredding them. You can dice them into medium pieces and once the chutney is ready, use a hand blender to mash the chutney. 
  • Combine some dry fruits like raisins, apricots, or dates in this chutney recipe. 
  • Add a few nuts like almonds or cashews if you wish. 

How To Store Apple Chutney?

Once the chutney is cool completely, it can be stored in an airtight container for 15-20  days in a refrigerator. 

Store it in a freezer safe container or bag for 2 months in the deep freezer. Thaw the required portion of the chutney on a countertop and enjoy!

How To Serve Apple Chutney?

Serve this spiced chutney with bread, cheese, and crackers. It is a great addition to your cheese board. 

It can be served with some sourdough bread, ciabatta, or crostini.
