Spiced Indian Coleslaw

Spiced Indian Coleslaw

This Spiced Indian Coleslaw is healthy and flavorful. It is made with red and green cabbage, carrots, cilantro, and green chillies. This recipe is a very refreshing, colorful, and crunchy addition to hot summer days as a side dish.

Traditional coleslaw recipes are usually covered in mayo dressing and quite unhealthy. This recipe is vegan, dairy-free, and perfect to serve with your favorite grilling dishes all summer long.

This is a very versatile and healthy coleslaw that goes with so many cuisines like Mexican, Asian, Middle eastern, and many more. Additionally, it is so easy and takes a few minutes to put together.

I like this recipe so much and we make it all year long. The best part of this coleslaw is it’s made with Indian spices which give awesome flavors to the dish. Fresh, crunchy veggies and crushed peanuts are tossed with the tempering, lemon juice, sugar, and salt.

Spice Indian Slaw

Cabbage is a remarkably versatile vegetable which you can incorporate into your salads, slaws, tacos, and wraps for that perfect sharpness and crunch in every bite. Use it for making crisp-tender stir frys, sautéed dishes, and add it in the asian dishes for some crunch and sweetness.

Cabbage is packed with nutrients, contains powerful antioxidants which helps reduce inflammation, soluble fiber, and loaded with vitamins.

Do you know red cabbage is healthier than green cabbage?

  • Red cabbage is also known as purple cabbage. Red cabbage packs a more nutrient profile.
  • Red cabbage provides a greater daily value percentage of Vitamin C, A, and K than green varieties. It contains more iron than green cabbage as well.
  • Red cabbage contains anthocyanin pigment, which is not found in green cabbage. These nutrients provide the cancer fighting properties.

I have added both varieties for pretty looking coleslaw and crunchiness. Crushed roasted peanuts add some extra crunch and protein in the dish. Carrots, cilantro, and green chillies create a medley of colors in the coleslaw.

 Variations

  • You can make this coleslaw with only green cabbage or red cabbage.
  • Add shredded carrots instead of thin julienne carrots.
  • Use store bought coleslaw mix packet to save some time of chopping. I like to use freshly chopped veggies which give the best results.
  • If you are on a gluten-free diet, skip adding asafoetida in the recipe.
  • Skip adding either mustard seeds or cumin seeds if you wish. Adding both the ingredients gives a lovely flavor to the coleslaw.
  • You can add chopped Serrano peppers or Jalapeño peppers in the coleslaw mix.
  • Use lime juice instead of lemon juice.
  • You can add roasted crushed peanuts just before serving as well.
  • Add 1-2 stalks of green onion if you like to change the flavor – add just the green parts of it.

How to Store Spiced Indian Coleslaw?

Chop the veggies, prepare the tempering, and mix. Store this mixture in an airtight container for upto 4 days. Add lemon juice, crushed peanuts, sugar, and salt a few minutes before serving the coleslaw.

Store the leftover coleslaw in an airtight container for 2 days. It might release some juices.
