Baked sweet potato fries are a perfect blend of sweet, salty, and spicy fries for sure.

These are totally addictive and I bet they will disappear in a few seconds 🙂

These are my family’s absolute favorite fries that go along well with some burgers, sandwiches, and tacos. I am sure they will become one of your family favorites too. They are so good that you will want to make them again and again!!

I was making oven baked sweet potato fries just by adding some oil and seasoning a few years ago. They were nice and tasty but not that crispy. Then I discovered the secret of adding a STARCH and they turned out so crispy from the outside and tender from the inside. Perfect!

Baked sweet potato fries

Simply toss the fries with some starch and spices. After that coat them well with some oil which has a high smoking point, bake to the perfection, and you will have crispy baked sweet potato fries in minutes.

What Makes The baked Sweet Potato Fries Crispy?

You will need to follow a few essential steps to make your fries really crispy.

  • Slice your fries thinly and evenly:

Cut your fries equally about ¼ inch wide and ¼ inch thick. Thinner fries tend to be baked crispier than the thicker ones.

  • Coat With Some Cornstarch:

Starch is very essential to make your fries crispy from the outside. You can use rice flour as well.

Mix together the cornstarch, the rest of the seasonings, and toss them with the fries.

You can skip adding salt with the rest of the seasonings and add it after baking is done, so you won’t overdo it.

  • High Smoking Point Oil

A high smoke point oil is considered 400°F and higher.

Why is the smoke point important?

When an oil is cooked beyond its smoke point it can impart a burnt and bitter taste to the food. Also, the fats break down and some of their nutritional qualities are compromised.

You can use refined oil like canola oil, corn oil or avocado oil for this recipe.

  • Use A Parchment Paper

Make sure to use a parchment paper which can withstand 425°F baking temperature.

This will help the fries to cook evenly, prevent them from sticking, and turn super crispy.

  • Do Not Overcrowd The Pan

Overcrowded fries will stick to each other and will not turn crispy. Arrange them in a single layer without overlapping each other for crispier fries.

  • Bake To The Perfection

For crispy fries, bake them at 425°F

Make sure to flip them halfway through while baking for an even cooking.

If you bake them at a lower temperature, they will turn soft and soggy. If you bake them at a higher temperature, they will burn too fast and cook unevenly.

  • Rest On The Baking Tray

It gets really tempting to eat the fries once they are out of the oven. Be patient – it’s totally worth waiting to munch on them. Let the fries sit in the baking tray for about 5-8 minutes to make them more crispy.

You can season the fries with some extra spices if you wish once they are out of the oven and still warm.

Baked Sweet Potato Fries Step By Step Recipe

Thoroughly clean the sweet potatoes to remove any dirt from them. Pat them dry with a kitchen towel. You can remove the skin from the sweet potatoes, however, I usually don’t remove it.

Cut both the ends of the sweet potato and discard them. Slice the sweet potato from the middle lengthwise into 2 halves.

Lay the flat side of the half potato down, working lengthwise, slice off ¼ inch thick pieces, and continue cutting the sweet potato in the same manner.

Next, cut the slice into thin fries by cutting it into a ¼ th inch wide. Finish cutting the rest of the sweet potatoes in the same way and set the fries in a large mixing bowl.

Process

Line a baking tray with a parchment paper and preheat the oven to 425°F (220ºC)

In a small bowl, combine corn starch, garlic powder, paprika, black pepper powder, and half of the salt. Mix everything well and toss it with sweet potato fries.

Next, drizzle some oil on the fries and toss until they are evenly coated in oil.

Transfer the fries to a baking tray in a single layer without overcrowding them.

process

Bake the fries for about 18-20 minutes and flip them with the help of a spatula.

Transfer the baking tray to the oven and bake the fries for 12-15 minutes or until the fries are crispy. Keep an eye on them as they might be done in less time.

Take the fries out of the oven and let them sit in the same pan for 5-8 minutes.

Sprinkle the rest of the salt and some more seasoning if you like when the fries are still warm. Serve them immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Variations

  • Remove the skin of the sweet potatoes if you like.
